Assam University Staff Arrested For Molesting A Minor Girl
Silchar: On Sunday, a non-teaching staff of the Assam University Silchar Law Department was arrested by the Cachar Police. He was arrested on allegations of molesting a minor girl inside the university campus. The unfortunate incident reportedly occurred on Friday morning that triggered protests and demands for appropriate action.
According to reports, the victim’s family alleges that the accused, identified as 57-year-old Faruque Ahmed, a non-teaching staff in the BA LLB department, pulled the girl inside a classroom and attempted to molest her. She was rescued by students and other staff present there.

On Friday morning, the girl’s family claims that she went to Law department with her relative, a housekeeping staff at law department. The relative had left briefly to visit her ill father at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). Mean while Ahmed took advantage of the girl being alone and attempted the molest her.
An FIR was filed at the Dwarbond Police Station, and a case was registered against Faruque under Section 75(2) (severe sexual harassment) and 351 (2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Section 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

On Saturday, hundreds of locals both male and female, protested outside the Assam University Silchar campus, demanding Faruque’s immediate arrest. Protesters questioned how he managed to escape the campus after the incident, raising concerns about possible internal support. They are demanding for proper investigation and strict action against the accused.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta confirmed that the victim’s statement was recorded, and a case was registered before a search operation was launched. He added that the accused was arrested on Sunday with the cooperation of the university administration.

Assam University Registrar Pradosh Kiran Nath announced that Faruque has been suspended from his position for next 3 months. He stated that the university’s Internal Complaints Committee is investigating the matter and also the authority is cooperating fully with the Cachar Police.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy against any criminal act, especially crimes against women,” Nath emphasized. “We are investigating, and proper action will be taken.”
