Data and AI Lab to Be Set Up in Silchar Under ‘AI for All’ Initiative

IndiaAI to Launch 10 Data and AI Labs in Northeast States

Silchar: The Union Government is planning to establish 10 data and AI laboratories across the northeastern states of India. Out of these, 3 will be set up in Assam’s major cities: Silchar, Guwahati, and Tezpur.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has confirmed that the remaining 7 laboratories will be set up in the following cities. They are Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), Imphal (Manipur), Gangtok (Sikkim), Agartala (Tripura), Aizawl (Mizoram), Shillong (Meghalaya), and Kohima (Nagaland).

IndiaAI collaborated with the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), is leading a AI mission. They aims to establish a total of 27 data and AI laboratories across tier-2 and tier-3 cities in India. On March 7, 2024, the central government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved IndiaAI’s mission to develop a robust AI ecosystem in line with the country’s developmental goals. The initiative aims to position India as a global player in the AI sector.

PM Modi has emphasized the importance of artificial intelligence and introduced the ‘AI for All’ concept to normalize the use of technology in everyday life. The ‘AI for All’ initiative is designed to ensure that AI benefits all sectors.

Under the Digital India Corporation, IndiaAI’s Independent Business Division (IBD) is implementing this mission to make AI easily accessible. A Data and AI Laboratory has already been established at the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology in Delhi. It will serve as a prototype for setting up the remaining labs across tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

To facilitate the setup of these laboratories, the Union Government has requested all states and Union Territories to share a list of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and Polytechnics located in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.
