Silchar: On Monday, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, seeking his immediate intervention regarding the deteriorating condition of the Gammon Bridge.
The bridge serves as a crucial lifeline for Barak Valley and Tripura, connecting Guwahati via Meghalaya. Gammon Bridge is over the river Barak that connects Badarpur and Katigorah on NH6.
Currently, the bridge is in a state of severe decay, with alarming cracks that pose a significant risk of collapse. Concerned local residents have expressed their fears over its critical condition.
The bridge has sunk by six inches, and there are big gaps at the joints. It shakes strongly when vehicles pass over it. Some sections of the bridge are missing, and a railing has fallen down.
