Silchar: On Thursday, Bimal Borah, the Minister of Industries, Commerce, and Public Enterprises, announced in the Assam Legislative Assembly that a modern methanol production plant will be set up in Panchgram, utilizing bamboo as the raw material. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance the socio-economic conditions of Barak Valley and create numerous job opportunities across the state.
The Panchgram Paper Mill, located in the Cachar district, will be transformed into a methanol production facility at an investment of Rs 2,000 crore. The project is anticipated to generate approximately 18,900 jobs, providing a major boost to local employment.
In addition to the methanol plant, a Multimodal Logistics Park (MMLP) will be established across 212 bighas of land, along with an MSME Technology Centre spanning 60 bighas. This development is expected to play a crucial role in the industrial growth of Barak Valley and contribute to the valley’s overall progress.

The Advantage Assam 2.0 initiative has brought renewed optimism for the people of Barak Valley, marking another significant step toward the long-awaited development of Panchgram.
Manabendra Chakraborty, the president of the Joint Action Committee of Recognised Unions, expressed support for the establishment of the methanol production plant, MMLP, and the MSME Technology Centre.
Previously, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had mentioned that the government was considering various alternatives for developing Panchgram. This new project marks the realization of those plans, bringing hope for substantial progress in the region.
