Night Flights, New Infrastructure Projects to Boost Barak Valley Connectivity

Silchar: Minister of Food, Public Distribution & Consumer Affairs, Mines and Minerals, and Barak Valley Development Department, Kaushik Rai, announced that night flight operations will soon begin at Silchar’s Kumbhirgram Airport. According to the minister, this new facility will be available within the next few months, enhancing connectivity between Silchar and other parts of India.

Speaking at the 124th annual general meeting of the Surma Valley Branch of the Indian Tea Association (SVBITA), Minister Rai highlighted several ongoing development projects in Barak Valley. These initiatives are expected to improve connectivity within the region and with other parts of Assam. Among these projects, the East-West Corridor is set for completion by January 2026.

Minister Rai further discussed the proposed high-speed expressway project connecting Barapani and Panchgram in Barak Valley. This project will shorten the travel distance between Silchar and Guwahati to 290 km. This proposed project is expected to reduce the travel time between Silchar and Guwahati to just 5 hours.

The minister emphasized that the state government, under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma, is committed to the development of Barak Valley. He also assured that the upcoming 2025-26 budget would bring positive news for the tea sector in the state. Minister Rai hinted that the budget would include measures to address the rising cost of tea production in Assam.

Atul Rastogi, Additional Vice Chairman of SVBITA, spoke about the ongoing challenges faced by the tea industry in the valley. Rastogi highlighted the decline in tea production across India. Noting a decrease in tea production to 108 million kilograms in 2024, compared to the previous year’s figures.
