Silchar to Shillong 25000 Cr corridor set to Approve by Cabinet

Narendra Modi-led union cabinet set to Approve High-Speed corridor in North East

Silchar: The Narendra Modi-led cabinet is about to approve a high-speed four-lane corridor connecting Silchar and Shillong at an estimated cost of Rs 25,000 crore. The 160 km high-speed corridor will be one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Northeast region.

Originally introduced under the Bharatmala project in 2017, the four-lane road project aims to enhance connectivity and boost economic growth in India. In December 2024, the Assam government had proposed the construction of a high-speed corridor before Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the urgent need for improved road infrastructure in the region.

Upon completion, the high-speed corridor will significantly reduce the travel time between Silchar and Shillong to just four hours. This road project will be a game-changer for travelers and businesses, particularly benefiting the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura.

Currently, road connectivity between Silchar and other Northeastern states remains a major challenge due to the poor road conditions and frequent landslides caused by the heavy rain, especially in areas like Sonapur to Ratacherra and have hampered economic growth in the region.

The approval of the high-speed corridor connecting Shillong to Silchar is expected to be made public soon. This announcement will be a major step forward in the government’s commitment to infrastructure development in Northeast region.
