Silchar: Mahbubul Hoque, the Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), has been sent to a four-day police custody in connection with an examination fraud case. The decision was made by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) court.
The case is registered under Patharkandi Police Station with Case Number 55. It includes multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Public Administration Prohibition Act. Mahbubul Hoque’s arrest follows allegations of examination fraud at a school run by the ERD Foundation. Also, fraud-related activities at USTM, including the sale of fake degrees and the issuance of forged certificates.
In addition to Mahbubul Hoque, several individuals have also been arrested including USTM Vice Chancellor, Hiramani Saikia, Principal of Central Public School. Teachers Vijay Dutta, Rezak Ali, Numan Ahmed, and Imdadur Rahman have also been arrested. The Assam Police arrested Hoque in Guwahati, in relation to a case from Assam’s Sribhumi district.
USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque Sent to 4-Day Police Custody Over Alleged Examination Fraud
The court has denied bail and has remanded him to police custody in another related case, Case Number 54. Mahbubul was arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) of the Assam Police and brought back to Sadar Police Station in Sribhumi District.
In addition to these charges, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has accused Hoque and USTM of involvement in “Flood Jihad”. He alleges of causing environmental damage by destroying hills along the Assam-Meghalaya border, which has led to artificial flooding in Guwahati.
